Hey everybody, this problem has been plaguing me since I got Vista months ago. This mainly happens when I'm playing a game, but sometimes it happens to me when I'm on my desktop. Vista locks up and usually displays a solid color (blue, grey, brown, w/e) and makes a stuttering noise of whatever the last sound was. Sounds like "duh duh duh duh" but really fast. The only way to get this resolved has been to reboot my computer. I know this is a problem that has been spread all over the internet, but maybe someone here will know.

I have already checked my RAM, it's in the clear.
At first I thought my PSU was underpowered but upgraded to a better one, no go.
All my temps are good, CPU never goes above 45 under full load and my GPU never over 65 full load.
I have all the updated drivers for everything.

Specs:
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L mobo
Intel Q6600 at stock 2.4GHz
6gb G.Skill DDR2 800
Visiontek Radeon HD3870
610 Watt PC Power & Cooling PSU
Seagate 300Gb Barracuda (OS Drive)
WD 400Gb Caviar (Storage)
ATI Tuner Card thing

Solution
First try control panel |perfofmance info|advanced tools and go through the events logs.
See if it says what is going on.

If not I would suggest trying to reinstall the sound drivers.
Most lock ups are silent.
If you are using the Vista sound drivers try the ones for your MB or vice versa.
