Can't save files to my external hdd - disk protected?

Hi all.

I recently built a new PC (2 days ago) with Windows Vista x64. I just tried saving a picture to my external HDD and it came up with this message;

I basically can't save anything to my external HDD. It was fine on my old PC.

What does that message mean and what do I need to do?

I have just completely formatted the drive and I still can't copy/move files onto it.

I get this;

Check the drive's properties and make sure you haven't got "read only" checked.

Thats got to be the problem I have 3 external HDDs I back up to and none of them were formatted with Vista.
