what if i just did this deal?

http://promotions.newegg.com/AMD/AM2/index.html

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138038

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103036

but the MB doesnt say it supports athlon X2 is this right? and will my 266mhz ram run on it? it only says it supports 533mhz ram.
You'd still need to buy RAM and a video card to run this setup because the board has PCI-e and requires DDR2 (does not work with your DDR).
If you want a deal for using what you have, get this S754 board + The 2.2GHz Athlon 64 3200+ included in the deal;

It's only $77, integrated graphics is better than old (4X) AGP cards,lots of power more than your 1.6Ghz AthlonXP, the CPU is a Venice core; cool and overclockable.

socket A semprons are getting real hard to find now too, 6 months ago I paid around $100 for a socket A sempron 3000, I can't even find those anymore. when my current mobo/CPU dies I will have to replace my 4 year old DFI Infinity. it will probably be upgraded to C2D befoer it dies anyway.

i have a 7600gt 256 agp card already tho
Then still get the same board/CPU combo; you will unleash the full potential of your card while still having an unwritten warranty to OC up to 2.5-2.6 Ghz on almost stock voltages since it's a venice core; you won't regret it.

probably around $200 i alread have a case, disc drive, HD, PSU
$200...; the previous combo with the X2 3600 was around $85 but don't forget you ned at least $50 of RAM (1G), a decent PCI-e video card and of course your aging PSU would not be safe for you new system in the long run and your old HDD would bottleneck your system pretty often.
In conclusion, I'd either advice you to 1) get the $77, S754 combo and raise a better budget for a total upgrade later (this gives you a better CPU for most games than the X2 3600+, spares you money now and allows for a better and cheaper upgrade later)
2)Add some money and buy all that stuff, but still keeping in mind to upgrade PSU and HDD later (a more future-proof system but it's more expensive + more urgent to change other hardware)
Don't have to add that I'd go for the socket 754 system if I was a gamer with only $200 :wink:

Dude, as a long time AMD sck A user (7 years and counting) I feel your pain really I do and I know the others have suggested some reasonable ways to get a bit more out of your exsiting bits using your $200 to shore up the foundations as it were but, and here it comes, would you not be better off waiting (I know :roll: ) until after July 22nd (rumored) when Inhell is set to stick another knife in AMD's corporate arse by way of price cutting at which time with a bit more penny saving an e4400 or e6320 might be well within reach or an x2 4800 if AMD follow suit, although I wouldn’t hold my breath on that last bit :wink:
