UBUNTU 11.10 UPDATING

Hello All,

I currently have built a pc and have Windows 7 64 Bit on on drive and I have also installed my old hard drive formatted it an put UBUNTU on it as I need a Linux based system for my uni work. However, I am on my second installation of this as installed it setup my shortcuts and downloaded drivers. I clicked the update on the installer and then everytime I booted up i got a black screen. I tried the keyboard command to get to a terminal window and no joy so ended up with a full reinstall. I am a noob to this operating system and slowly learning keyboard commands. Does anyone know a safe way to update the system without it crashing. If so please help or how to solve it when it gets to the black screen.

Also this sounds rather noobish but please put in the keyboard commands too.
Going to have a read tomorrow of the commands but just want it working consistently so I can then explore and learn more on it.

Updating Ubuntu is a little bit risky.

I would simply go with Debian (stable) or CentOS (stable).

They use older software that's been tested so well it is often used by enterprise.

For learning at school, they should be sufficient.

But I know with the OS I am using now (Scientific Linux 6.1 - binary compatible with CentOS) there is an option to "replace all Linux systems" in the DVD ISO. I'm not sure if it is available with Cent OS, but it should be, so I will give you the link anyway.

It is not as updated as CentOS, but it will get there SL 6.1 vs CentOS 6.2, SL 6.2 is in beta right now.

Edit: Any of the 3 should be right, just choose the option to use the entire disk if you are using a different hard drive to dual-boot.
