would 800mhz ram work in a motherboard that only supports 533mhz ram? if so would it affect overclocking? the reason is im gonna get this motherboard and CPU

but 800mhz ram is so cheap now and i could use it in a future build, but the motherboard only supports 533mhz. i also wish to overclock. what should i do?

or would my old 266mhz ram work in a only 533mhz supported motherboard?

You will have absolutely no problem running a higher rated memory on a mobo that supports lower speeds, as long as it's the same type of RAM (ie DDR or DDR2). Keep in mind though that your memory will run at the max speed the mobo supports (in your case 533). However, since you're looking to overclock, a higher rated memory will help make sure that your overclocking potential is not limited by your memory, since it has been designed to run on higher speeds.

On another note, I'm not entirely sure about your choice of motherboard as an overclocking platform...

Just my two cents

it would work but why spend more on 800mhz ram when you could just get 533mhz ram for cheaper, because the 800mhz ram will be running at 533mhz anyways?

m, DDR2-533 isn't necessarily cheaper than DDR2-800 these days. Also, as the OP said, DDR2-800 is more likely to be useful in a future upgraded computer than is DDR2-533.

troy, the MB you listed uses a third-tier (VIA) chipset that is likely to cause more problems than it is worth. For example, you likely will not be able to overclock it, it will likely be more picky about which RAM it works with, it only has 2 DIMM slots, etc. There are good MB options in the $100 range.
