I'm interested in getting the combo Tivo/HDTV receiver for Directv.
Does anyone have experience with this receiver, to let me know whether
it works well? I had heard somewhere that Tivo when it records an HDTV
program only plays back in regular tv mode. Any truth to that?
Thanks.
Pedro

It works well - just like the SD TiVo. Playback is whatever you want it to
be (480i/480p/720p/1080i).

I have that unit. It works quite well. You can record two shows at a time,
either HDTV or regular. Whatever you record plays back in the same
format/quality, no more, no less.

Well in light of today's announcement that Direct TV will start selling
NDS DVRs and offer HDTV local stations (LIL) only via MPEG4 receivers
(with all of their HDTV channels eventually migrating to MPEG4), I would
not be in a hurry to plunk down $1k on an HD Tivo.
And since Direct TV supplied a chunk of Tivo's customer base, including
most of it's recent growth, I would not be long on Tivo stock either.

Do you have a source for the NDS DVR info? I would like to read more.
All said and done, NDS and DirecTV plan to offer a great combo of satellite
and DVR. Biggest question is, will there be any upfront cost for the DVR?
I just got Time Warner Cable's High-Def DVR, the Scientific Atlanta 8000 HD.
First unit crashed. The second one works perfectly. Picture is good to
excellent, and recording is a snap. 160 GB hard drive, providing 20 hours of
HD or 180 hours of SD, (not both). No upfront cost, just the $10 a month
fee.
I won't do without a DVR in the future.
