I want to order ASAP, should i just go for the ds3 which is at $150 cnd right now or is the p35 chipset worth waiting for? What im most anxious to know is that when its released will they (P5k or ds3r) take the $150 mark or will they be more expensive and by around how much... thanks

The P35 tends to overclock better than most 965 based boards. It also slightly outperforms them at stock speeds with all things equal. This comes at a pretty hefty price premium though, the higher-end ASUS P5K Deluxe and the P35-DS3R are both probably going to be close to 200 bucks, the P5K will actually be over. This will come down in time. As far as bang for the buck goes, the 965 DS3 is still a good choice, but understand that you likely won't be able to use Penryn-based processors with it.

is it good assumption that they will be 30$ more expensive, p5b vs p5k and 965p-ds3 vs p35-ds3r

i doubt i would upgrade to penryn

edit: forgot to include that this is in cnd dollar

The P35 boards are worth the extra cost IMO. You get full Penryn compatibility if you go that route. P965 based boards may or may not support Penryn.

Think of it this way buy P35 MB now and in a year or 2 upgrade the CPU to penryn

Or go with a P965 and in a year or 2(if the don't support Penryn) you get to buy a new MB and CPU!

Me I'll be going with a P35

Just my 2 cents

Nah, only some of the P35 boards even have DDR3 slots. The P5K3 Deluxe @ $240. DDR3 won't be worth it for some time to come, especially with the latencies they're achieving now and the low cost of good DDR2. If you can afford a little extra for the motherboard, go for the P35. If you're looking for the best performance for your dollar, the 965 will be plenty.

Gigabyte P35C-DS3R has 4 DDR2 slots and 2 DDR3 slots. Of course DDR2 and 3 can't work at the same time, but at least you won't have to buy a new mobo if/when DDR3 prices come down and you suddenly feel a need to buy them ;)

Yea, but the P5K, P5K Deluxe, MSI Neo Platinum, and a few others, have no DDR3 slots at all. I personally think it's a gip, the fastest RAM these boards can handle will be 1333, and the only modules that can hit that freq have crazy loose timings, like 9-9-9-21 or even higher, and you're paying 4 times as much for the same amount of RAM. It'll be at least several years before the price/performance of DDR3 gets anywhere near the level that DDR2 is at. If you get a P35, do it for the Penryns, not the DDR3.
