I have a 400g external hard drive I'd like to use as a transfer and back-up device.

1- Let's say I go to a friends house, who has 1 virus on his pc but he doesn't know about it, is there a chance of that virus infecting my external HDD when I plug it into his PC?

2- Is there a safe way to back-up files from an infected computer without bringing the virus/malware/trojan to the external HDD?
