Ok, so we just installed SP3 for XP. At first the boot was failing, made some hardware changes and all was good seemingly... now the keyboard and mouse no longer work, but they work when the computer just starts up. They just stop working shortly after. I plugged in a USB mouse and that works, so I was thinking it may be a problem with the PS/2 ports.

So I got another keyboard, the lights on the keyboard lit for a second, then the keyboard seemed like it no longer had power.

Is my mobo screwed, or is the software messing with me? what could cause this other than the mobo?

I wonder if the upgrade has somehow corrupted the PS2 drivers. Try a USB keyboard (in fact if that works your problem is solved) and then delete all PS2 devices in device manager. Windows will reinstall them when you reboot. May not solve the problem, but it's worth a try.
