My brother was running uTorrent, and then the program started acting weird. So he stopped the torrent and deleted all of the data. But an included virus was not deleted. Now, he can't start up Windows Explorer (not even the taskbar), since the virus kills explorer.exe whenever it loads. How can this be fixed?
My brother also has Ubuntu Studio 8.10 as a backup OS, so that might help.
in task manager kill every process you can that doesnt look generic, weird names, names that dont look familiar, that sort of thing...then try booting explorer.
could also try clearing the prefetch folder located in the windows folder.
borrow another machine, download spybot search and destroy from safernetworking and the latest copy of free avg from grisoft, burn to a cd or put on a flash drive, install on your brothers machine and run a full scan, and see what comes up.
could also try a system restore to a point before all this and see if that improves things.
can he access safe mode and run explorer in there?
what file was he downloading with utorrent? you'll have to forgive me this one - i want to look up the download page and see if other peoples comments show they have also found a virus..
