- Enter (to setup XP)
- F8 (to Agree)
- R (to Repair
However, where it says, "Your almost finished! Windows XP will appear to be installing itself for the first time, but it will retain all of your data and settings", I forgot to read that part, and thought XP was installing (said it would take 39 min) so quickly pressed the RESTART button on my PC [Damn, I'm an idiot...]
Now, since I screwed that up, when it restarted XP loads the logo, but then the PC restarts again (no loading of my Desktop or anything?...
Right now I'm doing the RECOVERY CONSOLE "chkdsk /r" to see if that'll help. Any suggestions on how to get my PC back to normal? Sorry for long post. Please get back to me ASAP.
Have you tried doing the repair again? I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work. A repair install will take the same amount of time as a reg install, so you will have to wait awhile.

I can take the same steps, (Enter, F8, and then when I click "R" it asks if I would like to repair again, and I do but it doesn't get to the screen where it says its Installing windows (39minutes)... It just boots up, gets to the XP screen and restarts... [thanks for the quick reply though!] Any other suggestions anyone? Thanks in advance

Sorry for being vague; it does boot from the CD, I can press Enter to install, I press F8, then I click R to repair again (it says something along the lines of already tried repair, would you like to repair again? or something like that) and R goes into the process and finishes, but doesn't show the install screen:
Ok, "chkdsk /r" finished and said fixed one or more errors... So i typed exit and pressed ENTER to exit the Recovery console. Windows XP Home Edition screen comes and then when that is done loading, a Windows XP screen comes up, looks similar to this:
If reformatting everything is the way to go, then so be it... But if anyone has any promising solutions please let me know. Hope to hear from anyone soon...
I've got no idea. I've always been able to do the repair and have it work. (of course I've never shut down in the process...) If its not working, back up any important data and formatting is probably your only option.
I read in another thread that if your registry is damaged, it will prevent this option from working. When you shut it down, it could have damaged the registry. Sorry, its all I've got.

On one of the posts it says "you need to use another boot CD to repair the interrupted process. If your filestore is NTFS, you need to use a WinPE or similar boot CD in order to be able to do this. For FAT32 you can use a previous version of Windows to boot the computer."
I looked into WinPE (since I'm using NTFS) but its for XP Pro and Vista, and I have Home Edition... Is there another boot CD that can repair my interrupted process? Thanks for the help thus far. Anyone have ideas? Thanks in advance.
(Hope you're all not getting ice on the roads from the cold/snowy weather like we are over here...)

I'm not sure what bill is talking about. As you mentioned, the CD you have does boot the computer, but it fails to re-install windows. I still have no clue as to why. At this point I would put another harddrive in your computer, and back up your data. (I'm assuming you didn't do this before you started, shame on you.) Formatting and re-installing at this point would be faster then waiting for someone to come to the forum, and guide you to what you need. You could be back up in as little as 3-4 hours, 2 hours of that is installing windows twice.

Damn, well thanks anyway. I have a few days til a backup flash drive comes so until then I can wait to hear from any suggestions/fixes for my situation.
I was curious about the "Method 1: Start the reinstallation from Windows XP" and wondering if that's what I need to do. Will my files/data all be deleted or just C:Windows files? Thanks in advance. Hope to hear from you "viewers" out there.
Weren't you trying method two? I thought thats what you were doing. If it wasn't, do that now. Thats the repair install I thought you were talking about.

Yeah I tried method 2, but Method 1 says: "#click Install Windows XP. # click Upgrade (Recommended) in the Installation Type box (if it is not already selected), and then click Next. # click I accept this agreement, and then click Next. # On the Your Product Key page, type the 25-character product key in the Product key boxes, and then click Next. # On the Get Updated Setup Files page, select the option that you want, and then click Next. # Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reinstall Windows XP."
That is different than Method 2 (Enter, F8, R)
