What games do you want to play, and at what resolution and settings? For anything decent, you're going to have to upgrade your PSU.

I'm not looking for anything fancy just a step or two up from the on board graphics that this system comes with and will work with the stock power supply?

Don't quote me on this, but I think you may be able to squeak by with an X1600 or 7600GS with that PSU. at the very least a 7300GT (last resort). Help us a little more: open your computer and look at the tag on the PSU. Tell us what it says for the +12V rails.

Will this information be on a sticker on the power supply?

Reply to hooterville

Yup, should be on one of the sides of the PSU. If not, you may be able to get it off of HP's website.

OK, The power supply in this computer says:

Bestec (sounds like quality? LOL )

Output 300W Max.

+12V / 19A -12V / 0.8A

+5V / 30A +5VSB / 2A

+ 3.3V / 28A

Will this run the 7600 GS or what other card would work with this powewr supply?

Also does the 7600 GS have a quite fan?

This computer is nice & quite and you can hardly tell if it's running or not and I hate to put a loud graphics card in it.

Thanks.

Yes a 7600GS will work and I am pretty sure the X1600 will work. I don't know about the fan but you can find them with silent heatsinks (both the 7600 an X1600).

Thanks for the help.

My next dumb question is when I install this card will it automatically shut off the integrated graphics that is already on this computer?

I'm not too sure about doing any work in the BIOS.

Reply to hooterville

No it probably won't. Take that question into the mobo section to get better help than I can offer.

i have an hp computer with the goldfish 3 mobo and my int. graphics shut off when i added a video card. however, your psu will not be enough to power everything. the two cards that he listed recomend a 350 and higher. i would suggest getting a new psu. it wont cost but about 50 to 60 bucks anyway. im sure that it would run for a while but when that thing goes out it will take other parts with it. also, make sure that your mobo has an agp or pci-e slot. dont want to be stuck like i am with just pic.

Do you have an AGP or PCIe slot? What is your budget? With a better Psu and a decent graphics card you will be surprised.

Watts are not everything. He has 300 watts and 19 amps on the +12V rails (the rails are most important). Both cards only need 18 amps. The second thing to consider is, those recommendations for watts are based off a high-end CPU and other parts at 100% usage. His system won't consume that much power.

I'm not suggesting anything too extreme and I am sure it will run.Just calling reliability into question with a new video card or any other upgrades.CPU is good etc but 300W HP probably no-name PSU? Iffy IMO.

It's a china Bestec PSU so you know the quality is top notch !! LOL !

Yea, I'm sure it's the cheapest garbage HP could throw in there.

I might consider a new PSU also.
