Ubuntu on USB

Hello, everyone!
I wish to create an Ubuntu USB drive that can be booted from (not live, but as though it has the actual OS on it, complete with a filesystem, ability to install programs, everything that you can do on a normal desktop). What is this called, how can I do this?

you must create a liveUSB from within Ubuntu. you can save data to it, and install most programs. some things you will not be able to do like update the kernel I think.
