"Save As/Open" dialog box crashing to desktop

I have a really frustrating error going on that I haven't been able to find anything about. I recently did a new install of WinXP onto my laptop and its acting up. Everytime either the Save As or Open dialog boxes are opened the program immediately crashes to the desktop. I have tried disabling the places bar and adding custom places bar. In safe mode it seems to work okay, but that isnt much help. As it is now I have no idea what else to try and am looking at reinstalling again, which is a hassle considering I just got it set back up.
