I've been using a HP5550 and Bluetooth enabled phone combination for the
last couple of years and now I am getting tired of carrying the 2 of them
around. I have always been of the opinion that using a combination units
forced compromises in terms of the functions of both telephone and Pocket
PC. However, when I analyse exactly what I use my Pocket PC for, I believe
that I can probably get a more efficient use if I purchase a combination
units. Basically, what I use my Pocket PC for is for occasional e-mail,
instant messaging, maintaining my contacts database and calendar and syncing
chosen files between several PCs. Very rarely do I actually type a word
document or construct an Excel spreadsheet in my HP5550 but of course I
like to view it on my Pocket PC after having composed it within my ordinary
PC and transferred to the PPC.

Therefore, my question is a recommendation for a unit which is at least as
small as the HP 5550 preferably smaller and a unit which is both Bluetooth
enabled and wireless LAN. Perhaps a detachable or retractable QWERTY
keyboard for the occasional typing which I need. Budget is not an issue in
this particular case because it is something I use every day constantly.

Get an XDA2i. It is the most serious piece of hardware. I have had the
version before the wifi one for a year now and it is faultless.

Tom Tom Navigator in the car - sat nav GPS puck required

Dictation machine - note taker

PHONE! - with speakerphone for car

asteroids!

Word/Excel friendly

Password protection is reassuring protects data

SD card compatible

Watch DVD's on your PDA with Betaplayer or Media player !

Avantgo - sync and read the newspaper for free in the morning on the train!

Just too good really

Let's begin by this: you won't be doing any compromising from the side of
the PocketPC. Your PocketPC Phone Edition will have everything your PocketPC
has plus the phone.

On the phone side, it is a different ball game: the phone interface of PPCPE
is a quite simple one, so if you are one of those who like playing with the
advanced features of the phone, you might miss a lot of them.

Overall, I thought in the past that I would never go to a Phone Edition, and
then came the iMate (XDA2) and convinced me to try. Today I have my iMate
PDA2k (XDA2s) and I would never go back.

If I should suggest good devices for you, I would say any of those: XDA2i,
XDA2s or XDA2 Mini (at the T-Mobile network - the same devices might have
different names in other networks and regions).

up-to-date model available in my area.
One question, will my PPC apps still work on this unit? ( I have bought
several apps including Pocket Informant,multiple IM chat prog and a few
others. Will the phone edition handle PPC apps?

Not sure but I would think it would work. I would pursue these lines of
enquiries on the microsoft site if it is a concern, I didn't think there was
much difference between PPC and the phone edition.

If you do get an XDA 2 then make sure the first thing you do is password it
and make the entry screen say " if found please phone *************". This
simple advice saved me 400 pounds when I fell asleep on the train and lost
it.
