Equipment:
1pcs 54mbs Netgear ADSLmodem/WLAN router
2pcs Linksys WAP54G


This is the situation::

I have an Netgear rangemax router in house 1 trasmitting the internet signal. In house 2 about 100 meters away i pick up this signal with my wlan PCI card with an cheap external antenna. Signal is full strenght of 54mbs and i can access the internet.

This is what i want to do:

I want to be able to conect wirelessly to the internet anywere in house 2 without any external antennas. (except maby i need an external antenna on the receiving accesspoint) Create an own wlan in house 2 so to speak..

This is what i have been told to do:

I need one accesspoint set to client mode in house 2, receiving the wireless signal from the router in house 1. Then a ethernet cable from that accesspoint to another accesspoint anywere in the house spreading my WLAN all over the house. And i can access the internet by connecting to accesspoint 2.

This is my problem:

I played with this yesterday sitting in house 1 were the router is. I put accesspoint 1 in client mode, But to do this i had to type in the MAC adress of "the remote access point". I typed the routers MAC adress.? Accespoint 1 wirelessly from the router. Then a cable from accesspoint 1 to accesspoint 2. Accesspoint 2 in standard mode. I could then connect to the second accesspoint but my connection was "limited or no connection", i couldnt access the internet.

Should the APs be set in Static IP or DHCP?
Should they be on diffrent or same channels?
Same or diffrent SSID etc etc.

Help much appreciated!

Ok here is the deal in client mode you should be able to enter the SSID and passphase then simply be able to connect if your router supports this. Since you are entering a mac address I think your trying to set up a WDS connection where the router recieves the connection then retransmits WDS is a pain because it's not standardized and usually only works if they are all from the same vendor and even then not always. If you did get it to work in client mode then another problem you could run into is if your in house AP is broadcasting the same SSID as the one on the other side of the street. This creates an infinite loop since the inhouse AP will have a stronger signal causing the router in client mode to connect to it thus never recieving a connection from the other side of the street. The router in client mode should work fine with a default dhcp settings as long as your ok with not be able to windows file share accross the street. As for channel The one accross the street is probably channel 6 so you want to run channel 1 or 11 for no overlap.
