Yeah, I know you shouldn't do stuff like this, but I'm trying to save somebody some money if I can. They currently have an older Compaq pc and they're building their first new one from scratch. But, there's no money left to buy Windows. So, I'd like to take their old C: drive from the Compaq pc and use it as the C drive in the home build if possible. What can be done to strip out all the drivers etc. that would cause problems with this.
I liked the old days, when you bought a system from a company like Micron and you got a real Windows CD along with CDs for every other program installed. Uh, oh....I'm starting to geeze!
Depending on how old the old PC is, that will probably be a problem due to hardware changes. Minor differences in motherboards and CPU's generally won't cause too many issues, but going from say a Pentium 3 to what is out now will cause immediate blue screens. Best bet is to start over.
You know, now that I think about it, I think it has a Sempron 3200 CPU. He'll be making the new build with Intel. Will that automatically kill the possibility of using his old drive?
