My homework for linux was to download the iso for centos v6.0
I went to http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/centos/
Then went to v6.0> isos> which led me to http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/centos/6...

THe file i got was CentOS-6.0-x86_64-bin-DVD2
CentOS-6.0-x86_64-bin-DVD1

Are these the right files to install linux through a VM?

i'm pretty sure its not the live cd
but from this link http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/centos/6...
i didn't know if i should go i386 or x86 64

i386 is the 32-bit version, x86_64 is the 64-bit version. You don't say which VM software you are using but either should run fine in VirtualBox or VMWare Player.
