I ran a spyware program and now the computer logs off as soon as I log on. I cannot remote into it because my network won't find it. I've booted into the recovery console to the command prompt and followed everyone's instructions except that I don't have userinit.exe or wsaupdater.exe??? What gives? Can I just rebuild the boot? MBR? Is thre a way to edit the registry from the dos prompt...help!
What "spyware" program did you run, and where did you get it?
Not all spyware programs remove spyware, some of them install it.
Have you tried doing a Windows repair from the instalation disk.
The computer had become infected with the "Antivirus2009" malware. I used windows malicious removal tool and after I ran it, my computer logs in then logs me off. I looked for answers on this site and it seemed like the likely culprit was my userinit.exe and wsaupdater file were gone or corrupt. I piggybacked the harddrive and located the userinit file under c:\WINDOWS but not in c:\windows\system32. I was hoping that I could just take the userinit file from the installation disk in the I386 file and copy/paste. Would that work? There is no wsaupdater anywhere on my drive.
I am able to get to recovery console on the installation disk but I was afraid to go any further until I heard back. I don't want to lose any data so I want to approach this cautiously. Do I do recovery console or repair?
Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated...
