I just reinstalled windows on my SATA drive instead of my ide drive, I first changed the boot order in the bios to make sure the sata was first. Now the only way vista will boot is if the vista dvd is in the DVD drive. Without the disk I get a boot error, what gives?

Thanks
Sean

With that ASUS M/B did the SATA header require drivers to be pre loaded?

I have the same M/B operational but presently shelved, and I can't remember right off if it required specific SATA drivers, I know my ASUS M/B before that one did.

Are you connected on SATA 1 header and the SATA header use set to IDE?

To be honest I am not sure. I have always booted from the ide until now and am not sure what you mean. I have 2 sata drives, the one I am using is plugged into the #2 sata header. I have never installed sata drivers before. What do you mean by "sata header use set to ide" so I guess I did not do that. Maybe there is more that I should have done than just changing the boot order of the drives in the bios. Any suggestions of what to do even if it means reinstalling vista would be great.

Thanks
Sean

I'm pulling my manual to see if there is any help there, I'll post back what I find but #1 sata header was dedicated IDE if I remember correctly.

Did using sata header #1 work?

IDE configuration under the Main Tab, is the only specific SATA controlling options I see so far, as far as enabled and disabled is concerned, but if the SATA header wasn't enabled you would never have got the OP/SYS installed, make sure the RAID function is disabled.

I switched the sata drives so that the os was on header 1 and now it won't boot at all. I have the bios settings as you have said, I guess installing an os on a sata drive isn't as easy as I thought. Is there something else I might be missing?

Drives??? As in more than 1 sata???

OK what exactly do you have hooked up?

Try clearing the CMOS, reset the settings, and boot again.

ok , I have a 120gb ide drive where vista was originally installed (and still is) I had a 200gb sata drive on header 1 (now switched to header 2) and a 250 gb sata on header 2 (now switched to header 1). What I did was changed the boot order in the bios so that the 250gb was the boot disk and then installed vista. At that point vista installed on 250 gb would only boot with vista disk in dvd drive. I then switched the 2 sata drives so that 250gb was on header 1, checked the boot order in bios and restarted and system would not boot at all. I then reinstalled vista on the 250gb on header 1 and will not boot at all(I still can boot into the vista on the ide).

Confused yet? I just assumed changing the boot order in the bios and installing vista on the sata would just work, never thought there would be so much trouble. Maybe I should start again with assistance as I am obviously doing something wrong.

Thanks for you help on this.

Two HDDs with Vista installed on each one?

You do have a separate license for each Vista installation Right?

You don't have two installations Of Vista with the same license do you?

no it is just one, and I will be removing the one on my ide drive if I can get this 2 work, is that why I am having problems? I am a little nervous about formatting my ide drive as I might not have anything working. Just out of curiosity why would even want 2 vista installations on one computer
That just doesn't even make any sense to me, although I suppose their might be reasons. Any way I certainly don't want 2. Anyways, do you think getting rid of the other installation of vista will solve my problem?

OK I do understand, so to keep things on the up and up, (and honestly didn't even think about the ramifications of having the same copy of vista on my computer, even if it was tempoary) I have deleted and reformatted the ide drive that had viita on it. I then reinstalled vista on my sata drive. It still will not boot unless the dvd is in the drive, but I get a different message when I boot wothout the dvd..."the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. status:0x000000f" Would I be better off just reinstalling vista back to my ide drive.

Thanks
Sean

Check the ASUS website for Vista drivers for your M/B that may pertain to this issue, and the support forums at ASUS for others using the same M/B possibly having the same problem.

This is more of an older M/B ASUS problem than Vista, because the way you've done the new install should have, and does work just fine for newer M/Bs.

Your M/B was released at the beginning of 2006, you probably don't want to hear this but you soon need to consider upgrading your hardware, or run WinXP with no problems what so ever.
