is a cheap regular PSU good for this rig

i have a friend who needs a pc for music & internet...
but i don't know what is the gigabyte 8500GT power consumption ?

Something like the Fortron 450W could easily power the specs you listed. You could even use this Fortron 400W - very nice little PSU for $44.

even for vista aero enabled, a low end 7 series can do the job perfectly, that is a 7300gs 256 is more than enough. i don't know any name of PSU, but you definitly don'thave to go for high quality PSU, a $35 PSU is a safe bet and good enough for your rig.

i have a 6200 TC and it runs vista aero with NO problem everything is fast EXCEPT for the flip 3d which is a bit slow when there are many windows open. now a 7300 GS can do better than a 6200 TC , which will make anything aero runs fast.

i had x800 XL (5.9 rating in aero) and i didn't notice a difference between a 6200 TC EXCEPT for the 3dflip... i don't use that option anyway , gimmick IMHO. i'm just trying to save the guy some money since he said it's for internet , music , video , you know the plain normal tasks.

Do not cheap out on the PSU no matter what the system is used for. If there is no goming involved you would be better off with a low end 7 series card. No need for a DX10 card. Unless he just has to have Vista with Aero enabled.

between the X1650/7600GT & the 8500GT there are 20$.... this is y the 8500GT is better... for her- she will enjoy vista better in one year from now with the 8 series than with DX9 cards...

i don't think that today it's wise, for any use to buy a DX9 card. only if it's embedded... for office use only & saving 100$....
but maybe she'd like to play games when she have this nice pc...

i have a P4 2.66GHz, 1.5G Ram 400MHz & a 7600GS AGP- vista runs smooooooth.... without overclock... but gaming with vista still sucks & DX 10 is not worthy till crisys.... i have a genuine XP Pro so i prefere it for now...
BUT by than... i'll buy MY ~5G$ with dell's 27" than, the DX 10 will effect...
