I am trying to setup a replica of a typical small office company network in my home, to learn and use as practice. I am kind of lost though on how and where to begin. I know I want to use windows server 2003, and Active Directory. I also want to have a file server to be able to share files with mulitiple computers on the network. I am guessing I am going to need some switches as well. Any ideas or tips on where to start, and what to buy would be a great help. Also, on where to begin and setup first. Thank you.
You'll want a basic router and a standard switch, depending on how many computers you want to setup.
First, get all your computers setup running the OS of choice.
Set your Win2k3 Server up. You'll get a check list after completing the install and loading into Windows 2k3 Server.
Now, you have to figure out what you want to do with it.
Figure out what your FQDN will be (Fully qualified domain name):
servername.domainname.com
That will define your Domain Name.
Install DHCP, DNS, WINS, IIS, whatever else you want to run with your domain.
Configure DNS/WINS.
Install Active Directory.
Create your DHCP Scheme, add relevant information into DHCP Scope Options. (DNS, WINS, FQDN, Time Server)
Define GPOs in Active Directory (AD).
*You will want to install GPMC (Group Policy Management Console) - It makes working with GPOs easier.
Update your server to the latest.
Organize your user base, create your layout for your OUs, usernames, etc. Create your users, groups, and assign security.
Attach your computers to the domain.
Most of all, good luck. Its a lot of work any time you setup a domain - easier as you do it more often.

Thanks riser, that's exactly what I wanted to know. I am going to begin buying all the equipment this weekend and setting everything up. I'll let you know how it all turns out.
Sounds good.. if you need anything, shoot me a PM and I can help from there. Or post back here and I'll try to keep up. I browse occassionally when I find the time.
