I still dont' see the advantage of paying an extra 800 bucks for a rptv with
a tuner. Unless you can't get cable or for some reason, don't want
satellite. Otherwise, with cable or sat, why would you want a tuner?
Wouldn't it be best to just use the stb? Wouldn't that keep up with
technology over the next 5 years better than the tuner in your rptv?
Also, I'm hearing too many probs with cable card. Along with the rumor that
2 way cards are being developed/tested. Do you think there's an advantage?
I'm supposed to pick up my 62725 mits on Thursday. I'm REALLY looking hard
at the 61Z575 JVC. I can't get them side by side in any store around here
but the colors appear to be sharper on the JVC. Only downside is, no cable
card/tuner.

I think you asked this question before and got quite a few responses. In my
experience, I had a Toshiba set with an external HD set top box that I
bought 5 years ago. I had no reason to upgrade that box and still do not.
I recently got a Sony set with a built-in digital tuner and cable card
capable. I really like not having the extra box and the TV is much easier
to use. Less stuff to muck around when turning things on and off, changing
channels, etc. I would not have it any other way. Also, I am able to
receive HD broadcasts of local channels over cable without a cable card. I
can get other channels if I would go to the cable card. I get many digital
OTA channels.

I did...kinda. Sorry, I was just looking for performance type
reasons/responses. One "box" on a shelf doesn't bother me. Also, I can
recieve all my "ota" type programming on cable. I was also hoping for some
insight involving cable cards.
And I only got 3 responses. I guess I'm just trying to hear a "performance
vs dollars spent" kind of reply. Example; The tuners included in HDTV sets
are junk and not as good as aftermarket/comcast/etc. The tuners in sets do
not give you as many tuning options as stb from cable/satellite companys.
blah, blah.
Get it?
Thanks tho,
Don

"Performance oriented" comment on CableCard follows: With CableCard, SD
performance noticeably better than with the digital HD cable box. HD
performance maybe a little better, hard to say -- good each way. That has
been my experience. (Now using CableCard.)

The KDF-60XS955 was my second choice....GREAT TV. I had the CC guy down to
3500. I told him if he could make it 3300 I'd take it that night...he
couldn't. My only reservation was the screen door effect when viewing CLOSE.
Normal viewing distance, didn't bother me at all. If I start seeing
"rainbows" on the Mits, I'll be running for the XS955. Already told the guy
at Tweeter that.
I bought the 62725 last night...finally. I think the guys at Tweeter got
sick of me coming in and constantly badgering them for a lower price:-) I
would have LOVED to buy online, but I was afraid with delivery/warranty
issues. So really my choices were CC, BB and Tweeter. I got a comparable
deal as online when you figure in shipping but man, it took some work to get
it. They just wouldn't budge.
I pick it up tomorrow at 11am and then the fun will begin. I know very
little about HDTV so I'm sure there will be quite a learning curve involved
with tuning, connection selection, hooking up my receiver/amp/EQ/speakers
etc. I think the only thing I did learn about HDTV was to buy the set that
looked best to me...viewing HD/DVD/analog.
Sounds like I'll try the cable card with comcast first and see how that
goes. I like the idea of having the cleanest analog picture
possible....because I know it's not going to look as good as my JVC 36"
crt!!
Now I have to read some more......and ask more questions!!
Thanks for your patience

After reading a post here about screen door effect, I looked closely at the
screen on my Sony KDF-60XS955. I could only see the "screen door" if I was
just a foot or two away from the screen. Since I will never watch a 60" TV
from a foot or two away, it seemed to me that the effect is non-existent in
actual use.
On the other hand, I once bought one of those small DVD players that you
hold in your lap. It had very noticeable screen door effect and, because it
is watched from only a foot or so away, the effect was a problem. I sent it
back.

You might want to search through the posts in this group on the mits and
cablecard. I seemed to recall that is the one set that Time Warner could
not get working for someone. Most likely a problem at the cable company
though. The poster said that Sonys worked, but they could not get a mits to
work.

I really like HD monitors rather than HDTVs with tuners. Like you say, it
makes it easy to keep up with technology. Also, you have less to break
inside your set. Cable cards sound like a good thing, but they are still
immature and I have read lots of trouble stories about them. I will likely
never buy a HDTV with the extra stuff built in, monitors forever!
800 bucks cheaper! Man, you could buy an extra 30" widescreen HD monmitor
for that.
