I am planning to set up WDS using two dd-wrt modified routers. I'm uncertain how to get the new routers connected to the existing system, which is an actiontec router (GT704-WG) also acting as the dsl modem. Will I be able to set up the actiontec router to operate simply as a modem, passing the internet through while letting the other routers do the work and how should I set this up? I was having difficulty getting another router to work with it.
Ok this is how I would do it. First I would set up all the DD-WRT routers to have a static IPs in the same range like set the master 192.168.1.1 and the other one 192.168.1.2 and disable DHCP on the one that is not the master. I would then simply connect the actiontec to one of the wan port of the master DD-WRT router. Then you set up WDS by entering all the mac addresses and keeping them on the same SSID and channel. I set up my airport expresses like this using WDS figure it should be the same with DD-WRT.
If you can't get it to work through the wan port you can try setting a static IP to the wan port to fix it in the same range as the actiontec router. If that doesn't work set both DD-WRT routers in the same IP range as the acetronic then disable DHCP on the master DD-WRT and connect the acetronic to the lan port. The downside of the is the acetronic would be in control of assigning IP addresses QOS, ect so you prolly want it going through the WAN.
Connecting the lan always works because routers tend to get angry if the wan port is in the same IP range as the lan so if your acetronic router has an IP of 192.168.1.1 then set your DD-WRT routers to 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 or vice versa to make it work and just connect it through the WAN and setting the WAN to DHCP.
Setting up routers can be a bitch if you have any problems just give me a list of your router IPs and DHCP ranges (please don't give your external IP address I wouldn't want anyone to try to hack you).
