No USB when loading windows after Mup.sys hang

Yesterday my computer was frozen and would not start up in safemode. The last file loading was Mup.sys. After searching the internet it looks like this is a common issue with Windows XP. I ran a chkdsk from the recovery console but still the computer would not boot. I then restored the registry hive and windows loaded but I didn't have any keyboard or mouse. In DOS and in the BIOS the keyboard works fine just not when windows loads. I plugged in other USB devices also and none of them work once windows is loaded.
