I built my own system a few months ago. Randomly my system will shut down, or on a fresh restart, and the hard drive will not be recognized. I will ask for a system disk but instead I; alt+ctrl+del until it finds the hard drive. Then I will boot Vista in normal mode until a few days or hrs later when it does this again.
My question is: will I need to buy a new hard drive? Will I have to buy a new version of Vista because I got the one with a single install? Is there any other possible explinations for what is going on? Anything for me to do for troubleshooting?
Is this the correct area for this post?

In BIOS, try setting the hard drive with the Vista OS installation as the 'first' boot devie. Save and exit.

I have only one hard drive. That hard drive is the first boot device.
