I have made a backup of the registry using 3rd party software, and then I "cleaned" the registry. Now my windows is bust and won't load. LKN or safemode won't boot either. Is there any way I can reload the registry (or Vista) without losing my saved games etc? I have a second drive with XP, if it will help in any way.

There's no need to clean windows registry. I know many have positive exp's, but sometimes you can run into this kind of problems. Otherwise, microsoft would have included a registry cleaner, in addition to defragger, anti-malware, firewall.

Try a repair install, stick xp cd in, boot it up, select repair install.

Or you can back up your data to another disk or usb drive with a live Linux cd for point-n-click:

Or for command lines:

everything will carry over to your new installation of Windows Vista so you either have to try and manually import your save game files from the old installation folder into the new installations or search for a save game backup tool for the particular game
