Can I install this on a new HD?

I have an un-used Gateway disc that says "Use this disc to re-install your operating system" the disc contains Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit ..I was wondering if I could use this disc on a brand new hard drive. I have the product key as well. This disc came with an old Gateway I bought years ago..

as long as the product key hasn't been licensed to another machine, it should work fine

You say that you got the disk years ago.
Do you plan on putting it into the same computer?
If not, be aware of the possibility that it will load drivers for the other
computer and assuming it starts, you may need to get the correct drivers for the current computer.

Many if not most disks that come from the system maker auto install the drivers for the computer it came with.
