Machine is Win XP Pro, SP2
System is not part of domain or workgroup, strictly stand alone
USB Printers work
Attempting to access the cdrom gives error message that Adminstrator has disabled the device.
USB storage attaches and finds the driver, then gives the same message.
I found an article that said to make sure
HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/Services/usbstor is set to 3 -- it is.

any suggestions would be appreciated

hmmm sounds like someone got to that machine before you did. it is possible to set up machines so that users can only access certain devices and areas of the machine, can you access all parts of control panel? update drivers etc?

you could try logging into the admin account and removing all those stoppers.
but im guessing that will be passworded and beyond your access.

if you can its likely to be under group policy permissions, so goto start menu, run - type in - Gpedit.msc
also try control panel > admin tools > local security policy / group policy

in here are all the lockouts etc that your are encountering, have a look through for one on cdroms.

if its your machine, id say reformat it to clear out all the rubbish and start again.
