I have an e-machine Intel Celeron, 2.66 GHz, 248 MB Ram with Win XP Home Edition, Version 2002 with Service Pack 2.

When this PC was given to me, I was continually getting a BSOD with the following error: DRIVER_IQRL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I went into the BIOS and checked Optimized Settings (which did nothing).

I was only able to load windows using safe mode. I removed several programs and could then intermittently load windows normally.

I downloaded/installed Spyware blaster. I downloaded/installed AVG (which found 13 viruses that were healed/moved to vault). Once I completed the AVG scan, I restarted PC and again got the same BSOD and error.

I ended up loading windows thru safe mode and removed AVG. After restrarting I was again able to load windows normally.

I downloaded/installed Spybot Search and Destroy but for some reason when I open the file, nothing happens.

I did windows updates ~ installed Svc Pack 3 ~ again the pc would not load regular windows after restart. I had to uninstall Svc Pk 3.

I attemped to run Disk Defrag and get the following message: Disk Defragmenters could not start. The defrag box loads and shows that my system is NTSF.

I attempted to run chkdsk /f /r /p but get the message that my system is RAW.

Also, when I am unable to load windows normally, and load in safe mode, my eventvwr shows that several drives did not load.. Not sure if this is only because I am in safe mode or if it could be part of the problem...?

I am not sure what to do from here. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Such a tiny amount of RAM!

You would do well to upgrade that if you can, although we would need information about the motherboard before we could know what to do there. You could do it yourself and would cost probably 20-30 dollars.

Sometimes, and especially when you have major virus infections, your system becomes corrupted and unstable.

It's really best when this happens to reformat the hard drive, wiping it completely clean, and re-install XP. If you have an XP disk this should not be a big issue. Even if the original infection was not the cause of your current issues, this is the correct step at this point.

Your conflicting HD formats should disappear once you do this.

If you have files that you need on the system, I would recommend storing them elsewhere, in a USB drive of one sort or another, like a thumb drive. Don't plug it into the new system though. Not until you have it all armored up with new virus protection and firewall.

You mention that several drives would not load... how many drives do you have? What kind?

You need to understand, when you get a bad virus infection it will generally go out and recruit it's buddies. Some of these will not be recognized by your anti-virus software, at least not right off. They will spread across all your drives and hide everywhere.

Many years ago I had a hard drive that was so infected it had to be removed from the machine and stored for years, until technology caught up with the viruses and it could be cleaned and the files recovered. The infection happened in the course of a few minutes, with a visit to one bad website. This is not paranoia, but a sad fact.
