I'm going to be building a PC for the first time, and was wondering if I needed anything special for connecting the new computer and my old out to a wireless router.
The new computer will be going downstairs, and the old one two floors up. I'm currently on AOL broadband and using a DSL modem.
Is there any specific wireless router I should get, and also do I need to get a specific network card for my new system, or will it come with the motherboard or what?
ps- i tried reading the ethernet FAQ but its all in code and hard to read
thanks
Which ever computer will connect wirelessly will need a wireless card unless the mobo comes with one and I think only ASUS has a board with the wireless card onboard and the mobo is really expensive. If you don't currently have a wireless router, you'll need to get one. I have the ZyXEL x-550 and very happy with it Easy to set up and have had no problems
Make sure whatever wireless router & cards you get can handle all the floors and walls in between you. I believe the other threads are recommending G routers and Super G cards. Also, before you purchase something, I'd advise doing some product research. Linksys had some problems releasing routers that needed updated firmware straight out of the box.
As a sidenote to AOL, make sure they don't try to screw you when you attempt to add new computers to the network. When I used to live with my parents only one person could sign on at a time one day. We called them and they told use we need to purchase additional IP's for each person on the network... I told them they were retarded since we only need a single ip that will be translated via NAT (built into the router) and the b#&%* promptly shut up.
In case you don't know, you get one public IP on your modem which your router then translates to a private IP on your network (192.168.1.5 for example) this way you don't have to pay the extra money for additional IPs for each person on the network - you all share one. So just make sure they don't try to rip you off with some BS line like they tried on me.
