Heyas, if you can't tell from my post count, I'm a n00b when it comes to this stuff. I've been reading these forums for the last 6 months or so trying to learn as much as I can before I decide to build my first system.

I was looking on Newegg for fun the other day and found this ram I hadnt heard much about.

2GB DDR2 800 RAM. Now I know I read in a post here stating that DDR2 ram is better the closer its actual voltage is to 1.8V. This ram was on sale for $80 so I figured it couldn't be that great, but when I checked its specs, it was 1.8V. Am I missing something here? I feel that I'm missing something because for $80 I didn't think you could get DDR2 800 ram that was very good. Somebody please help me.

ddr2 is so cheap right now it's not even funny.... and i'm not too keen on the a-data brand. But i'm running some wintec ampx right now that's not supposed to be supported by my motherboard, but works awesome, and that's down to 85 bucks for 2 gigs (2chips, 1 gig each) on newegg. So it's just the pricing really... the main things you need to look at are timings (how they say 5-5-5-15) or whatever... the lower the better... i think 5-5-5-15 is about the best you're going to get for the 100 buck price point, go up to like 120-150 i think you can get some that are 4-4-4-12 or somthing... but if i were you, i'd just pick out a memory chip that is in your price range and has good reviews, then check to see if anyone else has used it on that mobo... (asus board? asus forums...) personally, i have an asus m2npv-vm and that wintec ampx ram ddr2 800... but it has to run at 1.9volts (on this board) as there arn't any voltage options in the bios... k?

so really you're not missing anything... the stuff is just dirt cheap right now... and be sure to watch thoes reviews... when i buy stuff i like at least a good 5-10 GOOD reviews from people that appear to know what they're talking about. :-p

These are all ~$100 mark and have pretty nice timings, ideal for oc'ing.

thanks for the replys. question about the timing on ram, the only thing i really know about the timing is that you have to check to make sure your mobo supports it and that the lower timings the better.

can somone explain to me in better detail how memory timings work and why is it that the lower timings are better/faster? is it just an OCing thing or is it overall memory performance?

EDIT: the timing examples they provide here are for DDR not DDR2, but the principle is the same.
