Okay I need a little help here setting up this home network.
What I have got is Qwest Dsl Service it is Dhcp set up on PPPoa.
Got a Actiontec M1000 Modem/router. only two ports on it one for wan other for the lan and you can add a wireless module to the top of it
And a D-lynk 802.11g router for the wireless.
Linux and windows comps wired and wireless
New construction
My modem is located in the basement in the utility room where i have ethernet cables run all over in the house like 12 different rooms to be exact. I want to place a switch in the utility room and plug the modem into the switch then through one of my other ethernet cables i would like to place the router upstairs to serve as an access point for my wireless. Will this work? Can i connect the modem into the switch. How would it send that out? What does the switch do if i set this modem up as a dhcp server to distribute ip addresses. Or do i need to run it (modem to router to switch to computers and dlink router(for access point)) What would your recommendations be? I know i will need a 16 port switch and i was wanting to run gigabit ethernet.
