Whilst looking at different chasis for a new server I am building, I saw that one of the 1u chassis that I was looking at (Supermicro SC811T-300) comes with a 300W PSU.

Is 300W enough to run the following hardware?

» Core 2 Duo E6420
» Tyan S5191 i3000
» 2GB PC5400 DDR2 RAM
» 2 x 36GB WD Raptors
» 3ware SATA RAID Controller

Obviously as it's a server, there will be no graphics card, but the motherboard does have onboard VGA, which will be used every now and then, unsure if that makes a difference.

That should be plenty, I guesstimate your system to have a really low +12v demand of less than 12A.

that one is rated for +12v@24A/288w, which is a bit on the high side. This is interesting...

supermicro[/url]"]5V + 3.3V ≤ 100W

So let's assume the max +12v is shared among the +5/+3.3 load (which is very common) so if we remove the worst-case of 100w quoted above, 288-100=188w for your +12v under "worst-case" load, 188w/12v=15.7A minimum continuous output.

So you are good to go w/ that power supply, no worries at all.
