I'm sure everyone has encounter this issue on both XP and Vista and now it is my turn. This all started after tweaking around on my PC during my LiveKernelEvent error (figuring it was a unkown program that I did not need) and I accidently uninstalled Divx codecs in the Control Panel - Uninstall Programs. I did not think it would be a big issue because all my files played even mkv files since I had Vista Codec Pack 5.21 and x64 Component Pack 1.81 installed. Went to freecodecs.com and noticed that 5.25 and 1.85 had been realease and decided to remove the old and add the new on my system. Afterwards all my WMV and AVI thumbnails went away only showing the media type icons. All files play just fine in Media Player and thumbnails for mpg, mkv, h-264, and mov all show the preview icons.
Steps took on my own to resolve issue: X = no effect :
- Installed VLC media player - X
- Removed VLC media player - X
- Reinstalled Divx and all Codecs - mkv thumbnails refreshed in Divx format instead of Windows Media Player
- Removed 5.2.5 and 1.8.5 - mkv thumbnails disappeared and would not play
- Installed 5.2.1 and 1.8.1 - mkv thumbnails refreshed and played once again
- Removed 5.2.1 and 1.8.1 and reloaded 5.2.5 and 1.8.5 - X
- Organize (Tools) - Folder and Search - View - Restore Defaults - X
- Right Click - Properties - Customize - Change Folder type to Pictures and Video - X
- Disk Cleanup - Thumbnails - mkv, mov, h264, and mpg all refreshed, no change to avi and wmv
- Uninstalled Nero 9 - X
- Reinstalled Nero 9 - X
- Right Click on media thumbnail - Choose default program - Browse - Selected wmpalyer - X
- Ran Tuneup Utilities 09 - Registry Cleaner - X
- Ran 1-Click Vista Manager - X
I am at a lost now, please if there is any steps that I may have missed please post it and I will try it ASAP.
Other thoughts
- Thought about system restore (right before deleting DivX in the 1st place) but I need to test the 182.06 drivers more to make sure it solves the LiveKernelEvent.
- May have to install the mediaplayer9 codecs but can not seem to remember where I found them last.
- The New Vista Codec Packs 5.2.5 and 1.8.5 may have miss the x64 thumbnail generator for Vista Ultimate 64 - will have to wait til next codecs are realeased.
