Computer description doesn't display

I have an XP SP2 computer in an SBS 2003 domain that doesn't display the text typed in under computer description in My Computer / Properties when you issue a 'net view' command from the DOS prompt. The text is there, but the 'Remark' column for 'net view' is blank.

microsoft documented an issue KB231312 where the string srvcomment is more than 48 characters long, but this doesn't seem to be at issue. (HKLM/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Services/lanmanserver/parameters/srvcomment[reg_sz])

oddly, the string in the registry is correct, but clicking the name of the domain under Microsoft Windows Network does not provide the correct name.
