  1. Download & Install the following 3 freewares. It forms a free complete security suite for your system!
    1. Avira Anvivir - http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html .
Avira is best & light solution for internet security, real time updates, excellent overall system protection.

    2. Malwarebytes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/ .
Malwarebytes is one of the best & effective antimalware tool out there.

    3. Ccleaner - http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download .
CCleaner is a system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool with an effecient & most useful registry cleaner.
  2. My recommendation for an AV is Avira, as Saran008 mentioned above.

Malwarebytes is a malware scanner. The free version doesn't provide real time protection, but is a very good scanner.

I have used Norton 360 for much of the last 3 years. I have a current subscription, but don't even use it anymore. I use Avira instead, as it seems to have better protection.
  3. does the free version for Avira provide real time protection?
  4. Yep. Real time protection, and live updates.
  5. +1 ^aford
Avira free provides best real time protection.
  6. I would add Immunet Protect to this list. It is free and has real time detection and protection.

It's pretty cool AV software-- once you download it and become a member, you are a part of the Immunet Community and gain "Collective Immunity", meaning if you register a virus, everyone else within the community is automatically protected from that virus.

    Here's a download link / more info: http://www.immunet.com/user/new
  7. avira free, malwarebytes free,pc tools firewall plus free edition,ad ccleaner free!
  8. Avira has real time updates. Though, you can manually update it if you like.
  9. Clamwin seems good, it is a very lightweight, open source antivirus program. And yes it works on Windows 7, I am running it now.
