Associating Windows Live Messenger with Mail

Ok, so back when I was running vista I would be able to click on the mail icon on Windows Live Messenger and it would open up Windows Live Mail, but now that I am running Windows 7 when I click the mail icon it opens up IE and goes to Hotmail. Anyone know how to get it to open up Windows Live Mail again? I've looked all over both programs for the option but just can't find it.
