I am new to the HDTV / DLP world and am looking for some guidance.
I just bought the Samsung HLN5065W DLP HDTV and need to know the best
way to hook up my components for the best picture.
Here are my components;
o Yamaha RX-V3000 A/V Reciever
o Panasonic DVD-S31 Progressive Scan DVD player
o Samsung DirecTV DVR SIR S4040R TIVO
I bought a set of component video cables and ran those from the DVD
player directly to the TV.
I have a coax cable going from the DVR to "Antenna" on the TV.
I also have audio cables from the DVD player and DVR going to the
receiver for when I want better audio.
Am I better off running component video cables from the DVD player and
DVR to the receiver and then just running a monitor out to the TV? Or
should I run those component cables directly to the TV and just run
audio through the receiver?
I am still getting used to the look of DLP, DVD's look ok but are
sometimes dark and patchy. TV doesn't look that good at all.
Any help would be much appreciated...
Thanks, Aaron

You should definitely use component cables from the DirecTV receiver if that
is an option rather than the coax that you are using now. For best possible
picture quality you should run the cables from the DVD and DVR directly to
the DLP. However, you many not see any difference running them to the
receiver and in that case it would be convenient to have both your audio and
video switching done all at once.
Concerning your picture quality this is just due to the way the set is
adjusted. My HLN567W had the same dim look when I first got it. I
implemented the suggestions from Section 7 of the following website and
things looked MUCH better:
I highly recommend you read through and implement those tweaks and you will
be amazed with how much better the picture gets! It's night and day!

That's an older model Samsung at this point - their 2003 model. If you
really "just bought" it, you should have gotten an excellent price.
Samsung's 2004 models have an HLP prefix, and their 2005 models are
"HLR". Some of the new models (which won't be out until June) use a new
higher resolution display - 1080p.

If you only have those two sources, I'd definitely go through the
receiver. There's no significant loss, and that way you can let the
receiver switch both audio and video at the same time. It simplifies
your setup.

SD television is pretty disappointing on HDTVs, and black levels can be
troublesome as well. You can buy a "setup" DVD that will help you
adjust your set to get the best performance from it. One that seems to
be often recommended is called "Video Essentials".

Thank you very much Brad, I read the information at Digiupdate and the
changes made a dramatic difference.
Question; does the HLN5065W only display in 480 resolution? It sounds
like the newer models display in higher resolutions, or do I need a
better DVD player that will upgrade the resolution?
Also, since the TV is HD-ready, can I hook up a regular UHF antenna and
see if I can pull in some HDTV broadcasts? I live in the SW Portland
area and read on AntennaWeb.org that there are about 8 channels I could
be recieving.
