I turn my computer on and it gets to my desktop in a timely fashion. Once it gets there though, I have to sit and wait before I can do anything. When I put my cursor in the task bar, I get the hour glass.
I have gone into MSConfig and turned off as many things starting up as I can, but there are still some things that I dont know what they are.
Here is what I have:
XP Pro SP3
Q6600
XFX 680i LT
SLI 8800GTS 512
250 GB Seagate
Things that go on startup:
RivaTuner
AVG
A bunch of NVG things which I am assuming are Nvidia things.
I can send a screen shot of the screen that shows my startup things if someone will tell me how to load a pic on here.
I am hesitant to just start turning things off, so if anyone has an ideas, it would be very helpful

A couple of things you can try:
1. run a disk defrag
2. scan your hard drive for viruses (Avast.com has good free anti virus)
1. I will try the disk defrag, though I have only had that install for about 6 months
2. I have AVG virus software, but I will give it a scan and see if that does anything.
It seems to me more like it is something that is starting up. If someone will tell me how to post a screenshot on here, I would be more than happy to do so.
Are you using the free version of AVG? If you are, then I recommend switching to the free version of Avast! I recently switched to Avast after many years of using AVG Free, and the free version of Avast is much better IMO. I dont know how the full (paid) versions compare.
As for the bootup times, the only way to improve it would be to make sure that the files on the drive, especially the Master File Table are fully defragged, and there are no unwanted startup programs. Also make sure that your virus scanner doesn't run a scan upon bootup, as that can slow down things considerably.
You can try Diskeeper 2009 Pro for defragging; it's not free, but is very good (I use it) and can defrag the drive fully including system files like the MFT. http://www.diskeeper.com has free trial versions.
