Was considering a raptor for OS/Apps and RAID/1 7200's 250GB's for storage...

Kinda pricey though...

Would guess the life-expectancy of the raptor is less than the 7200s...makes sense, more spinning, more heat.

Raptor still seems like an expensive option...especially for the GB/per $.

Raptors are enterprise-class drives. They have an MTBF rating of 1.2M hours at 24-7 operation.

If anything, they are probably more reliable than the 7200RPM consumer drives you're considering.

Ever held a raptor in your hands? The construction and materials are noticeably better.

They are heavier and have fins to better sink away heat than normal drives.

The extreme opposite are the slim-line Seagate drives starting to ship in the smaller 7200rpm drive sizes (80-160GB). They are super light, get very hot and I get a lot of bad ones at work.

No haven't even seen one other than online...at new egg.

Thanks for the lesson...

Ok to buy OEM or should I go retail?

Would it benefit me to look for aluminum 5.25 HD cooler?

OEM and Retail are pretty much the same I believe. Only real difference is pricing and whether you get a clunky box. OEM gives you just what you need: the drive and sometimes a SATA cable.

There's the warranty too, Retail usually has a longer warranty.

buy the OEM. the warranty is longer, you dont need the fancy package, and a cable is dirt cheap, if you even need one.

I think you hippies talked me into a raptor...

Primarly with your MTBF and "fin" talk...

Looks like the two OEM 150GB models from the Egg are EXACTLY the same except for the window (which I don't need).

$30 dollar rebate right now also....$169
