Games and restarting

I have XP 32 bit. When I play a game, it works flawlessly. When I close the game, however, then reopen it several hours later I have severe lag. So far I've noticed this problem specifically with Grand Ages Rome and Demigod. If I restart my computer everything works fine again (until I reopen it of course). What could the problem be?

Specs: AMD 4200+, 3g ram, ATI 3870.

What other software is installed?

just the basic stuff I use:
firefox, utorrent, flash, photoshop, trillian, winamp, gvim, vlc.

I've had all these and more on previous installations on this computer and had no problems like these. Could this be hardware related?

Can you reproduce the symptom with utorrent exited?

In the meantimes, update your software to the latest. Including drivers & os.

I haven't had a problem with grand ages rome before on my previous install. So I don't think the game code is to blame. This does happen without utorrent ever having been started on a particular 'start up -> shut down' cycle, if you know what I mean. All the software is patched fully including XP.
