I have an EVGA 8800 320 GTS card. Works great, but today I started hearing a weird sound. It sounded like someone was teasing one of my fans by gently putting paper in a fan. Well it turns out when I opened the case, there was a clear plastic sleeve that is attached to my card that was peeling off. In most products, you pull this sleeve type thing off. I did and am wondering if I was suppose to?

Hey Mate,

I have an EVGA 8800GTX and mine did exactly the same thing after i'd used if for a while.

I think it's just a protective covering to stop the heatsink getting scratched - kind of similar to the plastic that output screens get covered with that you always have to peel off when you bring the product out of the box.

Thanks. I've had mine for a month and it just did it today. I was thinking the exact same thing about the plastic that comes on tv's or say when you buy an electronic with a glass surface. They always have them on there. Oh well...I'm just glad it didn't get sucked into my fan because it looked really close to.

I beleive there is a foot note in the 8800 GTS 320 manual saying to remove it. I removed before installation, and haven't heard your wierd noise. Yes, you were right to remove it!

You've just accidently become one of those Anal people who leave the protective coating on for ages so they don't scratch it even though it looks like cr4p!!!!!!

I wonder what role (if any) it played into heat retention.

Well to be fair, it is quit difficult to see and i personally don't go out of my way to scratch my card.

Nor do i usually read the installation manual since every card i have installed so far has had the same basic process (with the exception of the 2 pcie power connectors that the 8800GTX has).

I would guess it might play a very small role. All I know is when I saw the plastic dangling from my video card(I had my computer running), I ripped it off immediately. The plastic was kind of warm for a few minutes afterwards.

The reason I posted a message on here is because I actually just looked through my manual after ripping it off to see. You are most likely right, but I couldn't find it after a quick skim.

Next week on Dr.Phil: "Is this person for real?" We talk to a computer person who waited an entire month to remove his v-cards protective coating. Is this guy for real or what?
