I just bought a Sony KV-20HS420, and was puzzled by this line while reading
through the specs:
"DRC Multifunction allows you to enjoy a very high-resolution picture from
any standard NTSC image (480i) by using digital processing to turn all NTSC
images to 960i or 480p resolution..." blah blah.
Converting a 480i signal to 480p is obvious, but what's 960i? This unit --
and all tube HDTVs, as far as I know -- displays either 480i/p or 1080i, so
what would be the point of upconverting a signal to a resolution it can't
display? I assume I'm missing something, but I can't figure out what.

DRC = Digital Reality Creation = Line Doubler
Yes, it displays standard TV as 960 active scanning lines.

There are various software/hardware combinations that use various methods to
interpret the missing lines. Some of them just copy the lines, which would
not help to even out the image, but others are claimed to smooth the
graininess, I presume with some kind of averaging algorithm. JVC boasts a
lot about that in its publicity for its ILA sets.
