Hello,

I'm looking for a product (commercial or open-source) that allows a
user to sync native PocketPC CEDB databases on a handheld with a
backend odbc-compliant database (SQL Server specifically.) A product
that works with Palm would be nice too, but right now I'm just
concentrating on the PPC.

I'm currently using a product developed by Xcellenet named Afaria
(http://www.xcellenet.com) Unfortunately Xcellenet was recently
purchased by Sybase and Sybase is dropping support for Afaria in the
hopes that customers will migrate to Sybase's UltraLite technology,
which uses proprietary databases on the handheld. I'd prefer to
continue using native PPC CEDB's.

I've considered developing this myself, but would like to see what's
out there first. Basically it seems that there are really only three
pieces to an application with this functionality: 1) a dll that sits
on the desktop that communicates with the handheld via ActiveSync
(using RAPI) to get the data, 2) A piece that communicates between the
desktop and the backend datasource/server via TCP/IP in order to send
and recieve data, 3) a piece on the backend datasource that packages
the data into a usable object so that the data can be manipulated via
C++ and placed into the backend datasource using sql. Of course
implementing something like this is no trivial matter, but it
certainly seems like it can be done.

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions on a third-party tools that
has already been developed? I haven't had much luck finding one up to
this point.

Thanks very much, -Scott

You should be able to do this using the Database sync provider in
ActiveSync. You'll need to setup a DSN for your ODBC compliant database on
the PC. You can then setup a relationship either through the ActiveSync UI
or programmatically by calling DESKTOPTODEVICE which is provided in the
adosync.dll which is part of the ActiveSync installation.

Hello Scott

Actually we are in Beta for our new product coming soon (End of June). It
will perfectly suit your needs if you'd use SQL CE on the device. But it
also would be possible to have it synced with CEDB's.
:
what does diaSYNC:
You're able to map the field from Appointments, Contacts, Tasks and any SQL
CE database to any ADO updateable Table/View. You also may set rules, so you
get some business logic into it. The configuration will take only minutes
and because of the possibility to launch an .exe before and after sync, you
may keep the sync straight forward and the update the server in order to
your needs.

If you're interested I send you a copy of the beta version and give you some
hints about pricing.

Kind regards,
Christoph Braendle
