I've been trying to reinstall XP Pro sp2 for the past several days. I have:
1. Used the XP Pro CD, but after it loads the XP tools, I get a BSOD saying can't continue, check for viruses & rund Scandisk.
2. Went to My Computer/disk management, left click on drive I want formatted, but "format" is grayed out.
3. Ran Kaspersky internet security 2009 and eliminated any malware detected plus ran scandisk with no consequences. 4. Tried 1 & 2 again with the same results.
How can I format my HDD without running into these problems ? Any ideas ?
I have legit XP pro CD and a boot disk plus already backed all programs up.
I'm running Core 2 Duo E8400, 4GB memory & RAID 0 w/ (2) HDD
It sounds like you are trying to format/install inside windows?
Change the boot order in the bios to boot off the optical drive first
press a key when prompted.
If you ARE doing the above, then boot into the recovery console and run 'chkdsk /p' on the HD to scan for errors.
The best way to run a virus scanner is to boot into safe mode and run it. Once running, some viruses can disable scanners. In safe mode, you can catch more when they are dormant.
It depends on the scanner you are using. Some scanners have a special safe mode scanner. I probably should've mentioned that you should boot into safe mode with networking, as most scanners need net access to update.
I didn't boot into safe mode with networking, but my new Norton 360 v. 3.0 did
run and found no viruses, malware, or other obnoxious files, then I rebooted with my BIOS set to boot to CD with my XP Pro in the optical drawer. I'm trying to get into the recovery console, but it does not give me the options. It starts loading
XP files and then when it says it's starting Windows, it gives me the BSOD again.
Is there no way I can format my HDD ?
