I HAVE A DESKTOP , IT ONLY HAS THE ABILITY TO READ CD, IF I WANTED TO BUY AN EXTERNAL RW DVD THAT PLUGS IN WITH A USB, COULD I AND IT WORK?MY SYSTEM IS A WINDOWS XP VERSION

Yes, perfectly so. But I would suggest you get a name brand. Not some generic with little to no driver support. However, write speed won't be as fast as an internal burner.

If you're handy with computers, get an internal burner for $30. Post your specs with:

And additionally make sure you have a minimum of 512mb system memory, 1g would be even better.
