I recently inherited a small sum of money and am looking to upgrade my computer.  All the following are prices from newegg.com  If anyone has a suggestion please try to keep near the same price of current product or lower.  And I don't plan on ever running a SLI setup so, on the power supply, I currently have a Antec Smartpower 400W, would that run this system?  If so I really could use the extra $100+.  On motherboards, I have been out of the system building ring for so long (current system is a Athlon XP 2500+ oc'd to a 2900+, and a Asus A7N8X-Deluxe board) so what's the feedback on my choice?  Any help you all can give is greatly appreciated, thank you!!

The only down side to this one is it is a lower efficiency power supply.  But I love the design and its black which goes great with the case, and the modular cabling sounds really nice to me.

I wouldn't recommend that 8600GTS at all: if you can't stretch to a 320MB 8800GTS then get an ATI X1950XT or Geforce 7950GT. I think your Antec PSU might be stretched a bit even by these since the SmartPowers are their worst units, but someone else will probably be able to give you a definitive answer there.

I'd recommend this RAM for only a few dollars more after the MIR.

What are you going to be using the PC for? If it's for gaming and you don't mind overclocking, you could maybe $70 by getting an E4300 and using the extra funds to try and pump into an 8800GTS.

Yup, the 8800 GTS is excellent value for money, the 8600 isn't.

If you wait two months and save $200 or $300 more you could get an 8800 GTS and an E6850 instead of your current selections, and it's really worth it IMO.

I looked at that ram, and unfortunately from what I have read it won't work with the board I chose.  The memory has to be 1.8V sticks.

I can't really stretch to the 8800, but is the 7950GT really better then a 8600?

This system will mainly be used for standard school stuff, internet, and gaming.  I am mainly wanting to make sure it will run UT2007 without a problem.  About the only game I play now is UT2004, and some of the online multiplayer games like global MU, but that runs on my girlfriends laptop with intel video and a celery stick so that's nothing.  I looked at the price difference of the 7950GT vs what I have listed and the 7950 was only $10 more for this one:

EVGA 256-P2-N636-AR GeForce 7950GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Video Card - Retail

Or I can get this one which is $20 cheaper after rebate

BFG Tech BFGR7950256GTOCE GeForce 7950GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 OC HDCP Video Card - Retail

But what I don't understand is they both have lower clock speeds and they aren't DX10 compat, so wouldn't the 8600 be better?  I really don't know.  I liked the days of the Geforce 4 ti cards, there was no question what one to get, just whatever you could afford....lol.  Oh yeah, my current sys has a GF4 TI 4200 card, so anything will be a huge upgrade to that...lol.

I would definitely go for an 8800GTS (you can find the best prices on slizone.com) and an e4300 (if you are willing to overclock)

oh yeah about the proc, what is the real difference between the allendale core and the conroe core.  I just remember before it came out all the intel fan boys talking about how it would smoke AMD.  So i thought that would be a good proc and i have read it overclocks really well, hence the zalman HSF.

Thanks again for all your help!

Here are a few items I would suggest you look at. Also, EVGA has a Full Lifetime warranty and if you wish to get a better graphic card they make you can  use their Step-up program and only pay for the difference between cards  for a period up to 3 months. Another graphic card maker I would suggest you look at id XFX, they have a Double Lifetime warranty on all there graphic cards. Where if you ever sold the card the next person would get the warranty also as long as they register it with XFX. Also if money is a problem  for costs, wait until July 22nd when Intel will make another price cut on their Cpu's... Good Luck on you upcoming build.

First I would suggest one of these two ram manufacturers that are using the Micron D9 Chips. Great sticks.

Also on your PSU choice, would suggest either of the two below. Really good 12v power you need. Enermax  and PC Power & Cooling are the best around. I just completed a build  using  the Eneramx Libery 620w and have the PC Power & Cooling in my Quad Sli computer, but there I have the 850w model that they have discontinue this year.

I do really like the XFX cards, they seem to be pretty good in the prices.

I checked out that memory and unfortunately all of it doesn't hit the 1.8V mark, and from my reading it's because of the P965 Chipset that makes it to where you have to use memory with that voltage.  I am looking into other motherboards now to see if I can find one close to $100 with equal performance to that chipset.  Anybody have any recommendations for that?

I really liked the PC power powersupply, but it is half again as expensive as the others....

from my understanding it doesn't matter that the ram is rated for higher voltage you can use non 1.8v sticks on the ds3.

Let's put it this way - If you will have cash in 3 months, I would go with a 7950GT right now, (eVGA), and upgrade to the 8800 320MB in 3 months, paying less than 100$ dollars.

However, I would stretch out 100$, since lets say that the 8800GTS performs LEVELS higher than the 8600GTS.

alright for around $100 what is the best GPU i can get just to get my new system running, and like i said before even a FX 5200 would be an upgrade to what I am running now....

Then in a few months I will buy the 8800GTS.....hopefully...lol

I would say the two best video cards for around $100 would be the 7600GT or the X1650XT the X1650xt I believe being a little faster in some games. I would check newegg in like a week or so because they often have a MIR on the evga 7600GT.
