Best way to send text messages from PC?

Hi,

I want to be able to send text messages from my computer to mobile phones. I know skype can do it, but I want to avoid having to pay, since saving money on my phone bill is my goal. However, I cannot seem to find a good program that can send messages as well as monitors replies. Is there any application I can use to send and recieve text messages for free?
