Greetings,

I am currently looking into getting either a Ipaq 3800 or 3900 series
or a Zaurus SL-5600 for linux. The price between the 3800 and the
Zaurus 5600 is about a hundred dollars. The price difference is a bit
smaller between a 3900 and a SL-5600. I am wonder if it's worth
paying more for a Zaurus 5600. I am a long time linux user so
learning curve isn't an issue. I want the most complete linux system I
can get on a handheld with the most support. What are the ups and
downs of each?

Any feedback from existing users would be appreciated!

I don't know the devices you've named, but think about expansion
possibilities. I've got an ipaq 3760, and the only way to enhance it is to
buy expensive expansion packs.

You get a (small) keyboard with the 5600. If you write a lot,
this is a bonus.

I have a 5500 and am very happy with it (with the exception
that I cannot get the software to rotate the screen to
work properly with Opera, so PDF's are not easy to read).

Presumably you have a 2.x ROM. A newer and much better version of Opera
comes with the 3.x ROMs and supports rotation.

But for viewing PDFs I highly recommend QPDF2:
http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1228 . Much better
rendering than Opera and much quicker. Plus it has its own in-built
on-the-fly rotation.

Regards,

Colin

I'd like to try it out, but right now I have serious problems:
I can't access my calendar data anymore. Must have screwed
something up.

Works again. While I first suspected the SD card (ext2), I now
think the culprit is the CF card (vfat). Opening up a terminal
and typing dmesg showed read errors on this card.
The Zaurus insists on creating a directory
Documents/Install_Files
and repeats inside this directory the directory structure of
the whole card ... ad infinitum ...

But at least it works again.
